Little Bits O' News 3/17/08
While all of the updates aren't complete and there are several changes yet to come over the next few months, be sure to check out our website, www.scottfieldstables.com, frequently as we are currently in the process of making some improvements!
Also, we are gearing up for UPHA Spring Premiere, and have 7 horses slated to make the trip with 6 scheduled to actually compete: GW In Lieu of Cash will compete with both of the mother/daughter team with Emily Puthawala showing in the Jr. Exhibitor Western Pleasure, while Mary will have her turn with this handsome chrome-trimmed gelding in the Amateur Western pleasure division. Also entering the Western Pleasure ranks is the new team of Candlelite Superette and Cathy Larcheveque, who will be competing in the Jr./Novice and Opportunity classes at this show. "Candi" was purchased last fall after a very successful first season in the Junior Hunter Pleasure division. LSF She's Come Undone will be chasing the big Jackpot money with Alicia in the irons in the Open English Pleasure $1,500 Jackpot Stake. Also bearing the LSF prefix, LSF Nevermoretal and his owner, Beth Ann Grella, will be once again teaming up to show in the Classic Pleasure Saddle divisions. Now that this team has a year under their belt, we are looking forward to great results this season! You should see these two strut their stuff, zipping down those straightaways! Haleigh Quigg is slated to debut on her FABULOUS new horse, Ultra's Special Delivery. Because the scheduling prevents them from competing in the Equitation division, they will be gunning for the Walk and Trot Pleasure division at this show, and this team certainly has come together quickly...aggressive doesn't begin to describe Haleigh's attitude on this equally game partner. And also showing No Mercy will be the very seasoned and solid team of Hermitage Avatar and Kate Kielceski. After finishing third i the World Championships 13 & Under Saddleseat Equitation division last fall, this team is going for broke as they enter their final year of 13 & Under together. At UPHA, we will be looking to get qualified for the Challenge Cup Finals so we can focus on pursuing the AMHA Medal classes as the season progresses. While all of these teams are heading to Springfield planning to compete, W-B Elemint and owner/rider Joy Puthawala are wisely choosing to learn how to be at a horse show together before they make the trip up the ramp! "Ella" grew up on an Amish farm where sounds such as heavy equipment and screaming fans we never heard, so this will be a big week for this aged mare and her little jockey, but Joy always looks out for the well-being of her mare, so we are pleased with the decision to gain some experience and sit this one out. So look out, Spring Premiere.... we are on our way! Also worthy of note, Congratulations go out to Grace Snyder who just today successfully completed her first group ride on her horse, Syndicat Deuces Wild. Anyone who knows Deuce knows that he is a bagful of bobcats when he wants to be, and given that Grace is 50 lbs. Soaking wet and only 7 years old, this is quite an accomplishment! GO GRACE!! Happy Easter to All! In honor of this holiday, we will be closed Easter Sunday, and the barn will also be closed this coming Thursday afternoon. Take Care!! ~Alicia
Drue Bormann teams up with KJM Heir of Confession 3/12/08
Drue Bormann, who groomed for Scottfield all last show season and also showed "Reba" the Reserve Amateur Hunter Pleasure Championship last year at Syracuse International, has switched seats and upgraded horses. With paperwork freshly completed, Drue is psyched to compete this season with Haleigh Quigg's KJM Heir of Confession in the Ladies English Pleasure division. While Fred will remain for sale throughout the lease, we are happy to see him competing with such a skilled, comprehensive rider in a very competitive division. And with the market being so soft right now, we are also relieved not to be rushed to take an unreasonably low dollar for such a high-end horse! Drue has already ridden Fred several times, and they are just great together! Congratulations to Drue and thank you to Haleigh for generously sharing her horse! Kudos to All!
NY Morgan Trader News 2/20/08
Winter has long since arrived in Montrose, but thankfully not before we could welcome in what looks to be a few very nice additions to the roster for 2008! Making the long trip from Missouri, we were just delighted to have Winden Reign arrive on the farm. Immediately striking were this gelding’s good looks and bright eye. At 3 years old, many horses aren’t terribly coordinated, and given that this guy is already 15.2, I was astounded at the balance and athleticism Reign possesses. I am very excited to get this horse going under saddle for the Junior Horse division next year. The big dilemma… where do we debut him? Thank you, owner/breeder, Tami Johnson, Windenhill Morgans, for giving me a shot with this awesome Morgan! As if one fabulous new horse weren’t enough, we also received from Gary Wilson two newly acquired Century bred colts, both yearlings, both royally bred. Century Casanova and Century Unsung Hero (out of DKS Spring Topic) are everything you would expect from their prefix-- typey, athletic and beautiful. While both colts are available for purchase, we hope to have at least one of them through the 2008 season to compete in the 2 year old In-Hand and Pleasure driving divisions. Gary Wilson, while no stranger to the horse world, is thrilled to finally be able to call himself a Morgan owner, and we are honored that he has selected Scottfield for the job of training these fine youngsters. While we love our young horses, we also love our young riders, and we are very, very excited about our recent acquisition of the very successful park saddle horse, Ultra‘s Special Delivery, (Luman Wadhams, Agent for seller). When offered the opportunity to take this gelding on trial, we jumped, and boy, are we glad we did!. Look for this very fancy 16.1 hand gentle giant of a show horse to debut with proud new owner, Haleigh Quigg in the Walk and Trot Equitation division this season. It is rare that a horse and rider team come together as quickly as these two have, and we can’t thank Luman and DeeDee Ludlham enough for this fabulous opportunity. What a team! And not to be outdone, we also have a fantastic Amateur English pleasure team debuting this season as well. Our quiet, (but enormously game!) student, Caitlan Reilly, recently acquired from Harry Sebring Stables the very sporty dark gelding, Hunter Hill By Design, to be her first competitive equine partner. After working for us all last summer as a groom, Caitlan came to see why we rave about the Morgan breed, so much so that she decided she needed to have one of her own! Congratulations, Caitlan! You and Jesse are a tremendous pair, and we expect big things from you in the months to come! This past summer, we were also fortunate enough to have the opportunity to purchase the stunningly beautiful CN A Touch of Hope (The Master’s Touch x E.R. Hope Diamond). While she was purchased to become Lory Kielceski’s Classic Pleasure Driving partner, we couldn’t help but notice her incredible pedigree, and we are very hopeful that she will be bred this spring to Minion Millennium for an ‘09 foal. But for all of the horses we are excited about debuting next year, we will also be missing some show ring stars from 2007. MSV Star Struck, one of our most successful hunters, was sold in ’07 to Margaret Van Meter, and will continue his career in the Midwest. We also parted with Cedar Creek Uproar, our banner Park Saddle gelding, this year at Oklahoma. Congratulations to new owner, Madye Bell, to be under the direction of Arboria Morgans in Port St. Lucie, Florida. And perhaps the biggest shoes of all to fill will be those of Hartland Best Man, who after 3 years of hard showing and much show ring success (with Victory Passes from New York Regional to New England Regional), will be enjoying a light year at home with owner/breeders Christine Gelineau and Steve Herz. We hope you enjoy him, Christine! And thank you so very much to Hartland Morgans for allowing Scottfield the privilege of showing this grand horse for the past 3 seasons. We will miss all of the blue ribbons we could count on him to bring home! With breeding programs such as Hartland Morgans, Ladyslipper Farm, and now Windenhill, we are certainly a source for young show ring prospects, many of whom are already in training. Be sure to visit our website for regular updates and a complete Sales List. Though we are still a bit overwhelmed by our fantastic 2007 season, we hope to top it in the season yet to come. Yes, the future continues to look bright for Scottfield Stables. We love visitors, and wish to remind our New York friends, that although our address is in Pennsylvania, we are a mere 15 minutes over the New York border, and would love to have our New York Morgan friends stop in for a visit and a tour!
1/25/08 Haleigh's Horse Hunt comes to a Halt
After much searching, hours of watching videos (some of which were nothing short of scary!), getting thisclose to purchasing two different mounts, the long struggle to find the perfect mount for Haleigh was rewarded in a very big way when an extra "Special Delivery" arrived on the farm in mid-January. After a brief trial period, the Quigg family happily sealed the deal on a beautiful 16.1 hand Park Saddle gelding, Ultra's Special Delivery. "Del" is just a gem of a guy, with his big easy trot, happy expression and solid-as-a-rock temperament. At only 6 years of age, and never a ribbon lower than third, even at New England and Grand National, we are very excited about this fabulous Morgan. Haleigh will be entering her final year of walk and trot this season, and she and Del, after only a month together, are already set to hit the in-gate. With Haleigh's natural elegance and grace on a horse, coupled with Del's incredibly balanced, fluid trot, this team presents one pretty picture! Walk and Trot riders, Be Warned! This is sure to be Haleigh Quigg's Year!
Scottfield Stables Year End Awards Wrap-up, 1/13/08
On January 13th, over 60 people attended the 2nd Anual Scottfield Stables Year End Awards Party. With enough food to feed an army, music, and the camaraderie that has come to be expected from the tight-knit Scottfield Team, the party was a successful one to say the least! After everyone had a chance to catch up, and eat as much food as was physically possible, the Awards portion of the day was finally kicked off. First, the 2007 season was recapped by redistributing the first place, Champion and Reserve Championship ribbons to their winners, followed by the NY Highpoint ribbons. These prizes are displayed in the Scottfield Office all through the season for everyone to see, but are surely hanging in the bedrooms of all of our proud students and breeders by now! Next, we presented special certificates to all of those Morgan-lovers who reached a milestone in 2007. Those milestones included a certificate for all of those riders who, in 2007, entered their First Competition, took their First Victory Pass, “Stepped Up” to a new division, or purchased a Morgan (our “Ownership” Certificate). We also gave certificates to all of those riders who competed at New England Regional and the Grand National Horse Shows. From there, we graduated to our “Plaque Awards.” Obviously, the prize here is a plaque. Ours are on a dark wood base with a brass horse and nameplate that is engraved with the award won and the recipient’s name. This year, our Plaque Awards were dispersed as follows: Most Improved rider, 12 & Under--Mikayla Henry, 13-18 -- Emily Puthawala, Adult -- Lory Kielceski; Drive and Determination -- Kate Kielceski; Sportsmanship -- Caitlan Reilly; Biggest Win of the Year -- The Kielceski Family (Lory Kielceski & Hartland Best Man, and Kate Kielceski & Hermitage Avatar), both of whom took Victory Passes at New England Regional in 2007. This awards ceremony serves many purposes. First, it gives everyone a chance to visit those friends with whom we spend so much time in the summer, but not so much in the off-season winter months. Secondly, it is a great way to recap the season behind us, and finally, it gets everyone excited about the season to come! And boy, are we excited about 2008! Good luck to everyone…we can’t wait to see all of our friends on the rail again…soon!
Caitlan's Cool Catch! 1/03/08
Throughout the entire 2007 show season, Caitlan Reilly could be found as a crew member on the Scottfield Team, both home at the farm and away at the horse shows, always working hard to ensure the success of the horses and riders around her. So, when Caitlan decided in December that she would like to purchase her own Morgan Show Horse, I couldn't have been more excited for her! I really felt that Caitlan had proven herself throughout the entire season with a strong work ethic and a personality that is truly impossible to dislike. She fit in well even without a horse, but I could see right along that she had the makings of a great competitor, too. Then, to add the icing to the cake, she informed me that, despite her strong hunt seat background (that included jumping!), she wanted to get a Saddleseat horse! And so, the hunt began. Unlike some searches, which can be drawn out and torturous for the buyer, this quest would be very short and very sweet! I knew what I wanted for Caitlan-- something experienced, safe, and reliable, but also very game and exciting to show. Though I watched many videos, it was the very first horse that we actually tried that we ended up taking home. Together, Caitlan and I made the trek to Harry Sebring's stables in Massachusetts where we tested out Hunter Hill By Design. Although his successes to date have been primarily in harness (and with victory asses at all of the top New England shows, his successes have been many!), I felt that he and Caitlan would be a great fit. Jesse is bright, happy, willing and GAME!! I also consider his driving credentials to e a huge selling point-- he has loads of show ring experience, but will still be a fresh face under saddle! A son of the incomparable stallion , HVK Bell Flaire, Jesse bridles up just great and has a very sporty way of going. The only problem? This gelding is a lot of horse for anyone, let alone some one who has just switched over from hunter tack! Fortunately, Caitlan has once again risen to the challenge! With her strong desire to succeed and willingness to do the hard work, she is already enjoying consistently great rides on her new mount, I look forward to this team's debut at the Vermont Spring Classic in May. Caitlan and "Jesse" are slated to compete in the English Pleasure ranks, and with the cool headed mind-set, but aggressive style of this talented rider, I am sure this division will suit them well!!
12/03/07 NY Morgan Awards Banquet
On December 1st, a wonderful group of 16 "Scottfieldians" made the trek to Syracuse for the annual New York State Morgan Horse Society Year End Awards banquet. Prior to the actual party, Beth and Dave Grella hosted a little cocktail hour at their beautiful home in Tully, NY, just outside of Syracuse. After spectacularly tasty shrimp dip, delightful spinach and artichoke dip, and world famous Margaritas, we were on our way!
