The 2008 New York Morgan Regional marked the five year anniversary of Scottfield’s first attendance there back in 2003. Since that first year of business, Scottfield’s training and lesson programs have both more than quadrupled, and we have continued to upgrade in the quality of the Morgan horses we add to our show string. The group that we enjoyed at this year’s New York Morgan reflected those sentiments. With 9 horses making the trip, and 8 slated to show, we had a representative for nearly every division, from Western Equitation to English Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure to Walk and Trot. And while the classes we entered varied greatly from horse to horse, the results were very consistent, with the large majority of the prizes we earned being in the top three! Given that this was a Regional competition, and the second largest one in the country, at that, we were happy to be a competitive addition to the festivities.

Leading off the week, and giving us an idea of just how big the Regional competition would be this year was the 18 horse Novice Western Pleasure class. With trainer Alicia Fraser in the saddle, it was Cathy Larcheveque’s gorgeous black beauty, Candlelite Superette who would jog away with an impressive fourth place finish in this huge and challenging class for the green western pleasure horses. The very next day, Candi jogged up the ramp to try her chances in the Limit class, and she was again solid as a rock to earn a very nice fifth place finish in this class.

It was at New England Regional that the KLS Morgan family of Steve, Lory and Kate Kielceski, decided to purchase a prospect horse in hopes of creating Kate’s next equitation superstar. The chosen equine was the big bodied, animated and typey bay gelding, WTS Simply Outrageous. By Simply Maserati and out of ROF Rage, “Larry” has been a marvelous addition to the string. While he is still green and in need of miles under saddle, Larry transitioned beautifully to our program, and after only 6 weeks of training at our farm, made his English Pleasure saddle debut at New York by winning the very competitive Novice English Pleasure class. Prior to this win, Larry had earned a good 6th place finish in a large class of 15, and had the judge not been looking RIGHT AT his leap into his second way canter that ended up with him landing briefly on the incorrect lead, we think Larry would have been a tough one to beat in that class as well! Like I said, this one needs some miles, but boy, is he talented! Kate is waiting with baited breath to get a ride on her cool new horse, and I would guess that ride will happen some time before Thanksgiving if Larry keeps performing like he has been!

Trying her hand in a different division, Kate Kielceski showed the attractive bay hunter, Hartland Infinity, in the Bridle Path Hack class. As we have come to expect from this promising 5 year old gelding, “Quinn” didn’t take a step out of place and earned the Reserve prize! This was very exciting news for Mary and daughter Joy Puthawala, who purchased Quinn back in July to become Joy’s new partner. Because Quinn is still rather inexperienced in the ring, Mary and Joy made a smart move in asking Kate to show the horse throughout the week to get him ready for Joy to make her debut with him on Friday in the walk/trot hunter pleasure class. Their wise decision paid off when Joy and Quinn enjoyed a brilliant first class together, taking home the fourth place finish! And even better, on Saturday, Joy stepped it up a notch, gaining in confidence with her new friend, and finished third in the walk/trot hunter equitation class. Congratulations, Joy! And thanks to Steve Herz and Christine Gelineau for helping put this deal together to get such a nice horse to such a deserving little girl.

Kate was in more familiar territory when she changed back into her saddle suit to compete in the 13 & Under Saddleseat Equitation class with her faithful partner, Hermitage Avatar. After completing beautiful rail work, Kate was called out as the winner, and enjoyed a great victory pass on her beloved “Ronni.” Together this team also claimed a third finish in the deep 17 & Under Medal class, and finished with a strong 5th in the 17 & Under Equitation Championship after completing Judge Sandy Sessink’s complicated pattern with Kate’s usual attention to detail and precision.

Caitlan Reilly and Hunter Hill By Design, a team still enjoying their debut season, certainly had their work cut out for them in the Amateur English pleasure division. With double digit entries and Oklahoma caliber horses being the norm, even great teams were struggling to get into the prizes. Caitlan and “Jesse” stepped up to bat with a great ride in the 15.1 hands and over class, where she finished strong with a respectable 8th place finish in this good company. This team continues to improve in leaps and bounds, and I think it is one of our most promising pairings for the 2009 season.

Emily Puthawala completed what was a slightly hit or miss season with a big “HIT” in the 13 & Under Western Equitation class when she and her colorful partner, GW In Lieu of Cash, passed all of the creative rail tests asked of them beautifully to earn the Reserve honors. Emily is an excellent student who is not satisfied with anything but her own best efforts, and she continues to impress me with her determination to succeed. “Scudder” has taught Emily a lot, and they enjoyed many good classes this year, including winning the AMHA Western Seat Medal their first time trying for it. And while Scudder’s spot is safe in the barn, Emily is itching to try her hand at the Saddleseat Equitation division and we are currently in the process of moving Emily in that exciting new direction! I have high expectations for this talented young lady.

LSF She’s Come Undone has enjoyed a very successful show season, winning herself many fans along the way with her “little engine that could” attitude and heart. Following a third place finish in the Open English Pleasure Mares, “Libby” really turned it on for the Thursday evening UPHA Pink Ribbon Ladies English Pleasure class. With one big pass after another, Libby was consistent and aggressive to earn the third place finish in this fun class of thirteen!

Drue Bormann has proven to be an invaluable member of Team Scottfield, grooming most of Scottfield‘s shows this year. To say she is outstanding at her job would be a huge understatement. Drue views a week at a horseshow away from her professional career at Binghamton University a relaxing vacation, but you won’t find Drue resting for even a moment during the horseshow; she is on top of all of it, 100% and all of the time! And when Drue isn’t grooming, she’s showing. After only 8 weeks of driving lessons at home, Drue made her show ring driving debut with the exquisitely beautiful gelding, KJM Heir Of Confession. Following a 6th place finish in the Amateur qualifier (a ribbon reflective of Drue’s ability to follow my “Go Conservatively” instructions), I was happy and confident to turn Drue and “Fred” loose in the Ladies Pleasure Driving class. I had seen Drue stay calm and composed the day before, and Fred behaved as well as I expected, so I allowed the team to go full speed ahead in their second class. I couldn’t have been more pleased with their Reserve finish in that Ladies class, especially given the amazing company they were in! We look forward to moving Fred to a lucky new owner this fall, and invite inquiries on this fabulous, versatile Morgan. Drue, on the other hand, is gearing up with a new partner for ‘09, and we are indescribably overjoyed to have one of our most successful show horses back on the lineup, Hartland Best Man. Thanks to our friends at Hartland Morgans, “Chad” will once again compete under the Scottfield banner after a year off at home in the fields of Windsor, New York. Drue is a very talented rider, and now she has driving on her resume , too, so we are thrilled to link her up with a horse that has been a tremendous winner in both of those divisions.

And as for the ninth horse, the one that didn’t show? Well, that horse is going to remain our “Scottfield Stable Secret” until next spring! Good things come to those who wait.

Alicia Fraser, owner/trainer of Scottfield Stables in Montrose, PA, hosted an open house on August 23. The beautiful summer day brought almost 50 newcomers and 50 Morgan friends and family members to the farm. Local disc jockey Brent Jay Natzle provided background music during all the presentations, which were held in the farm's new 80' x 200' outdoor arena. Mary Puthwala was the announcer. With the help of a dedicated crew in the barn, Alicia presented six Morgans. The first was LSF Claris Starling, a 4 year old black mare, whom she led in-hand. She then presented KJM Heir of Confession, an 11 year old bay gelding, as a pleasure driving horse. Next came LSF She's Come Undone, a 5 year old chestnut mare, as an English pleasure mount. Using Hermitage Avatar, Alicia gave a thorough demonstration of saddle seat equitation that included both rail work and patterns. Finally, to close the show, Alicia debuted WTS Simply Outrageous, a 7 year old son of Simply Maserati, to demonstrate the Park division. During a break between the presentations tickets were pulled out of a hat and the winning dicket holders were awarded riding lessons at Scottfield Stables. The DJ figured out who traveled the furthest to attend this event and Nick and Robin Pelham received a $25 gas card. Refreshments, including finger foods, dips and desserts were enjoyed by all.

2008 Syracuse International

As always, Team Scottfield made our way up to the Syracuse International Horse Show, a perennial favorite for our fun-loving group of competitors! From the good company, to the parties, to the very strong competition, this horse show was nothing short of outstanding!

The horses from Ladyslipper Farm’s breeding program certainly made their presence known at International this year. LSF She’s Come Undone, (LSF Fortunate Son x Bohemian Rhapsody), though she was very much having a “mare day” when it was her turn to qualify, still put in a good performance to finish 5th in the very competitive Open English pleasure class. LSF Night Vision (UVM Tennyson x Lakeland Paradise) made her English Pleasure debut a good one, finishing 4th in both the Junior/Novice English Pleasure qualifier and Championship out of a strong field of 12! This very sporty black mare was solid as a rock and could have cared less about the chaos that seemed abundant in these exciting classes. “Kyerra” is definitely ready to step into a new role as a kid’s or amateur horse. Feel free to inquire on this even-tempered beauty. Kyerra’s maternal ½ brother, LSF Nevermoretal, was a showstopper in the Open To All Breeds Open English Pleasure section. In the qualifier, 18 horses answered the call, and whether they were Saddlebreds, Friesians, Morgans, or National Show Horses, these horses were all trotting their hearts out for the top prize! LSF Nevermoretal worked through the traffic like a pro, and was rewarded for his consistency and outstanding road trot with the Reserve prize! The following day, fewer came back to play, but the top group gave it another go. Still, “Kobe” could not be beaten, and trotted away with the Grand Championship in the Open to All breeds English Pleasure division. Trainer, Alicia Fraser had the honors of riding this zippy gelding on behalf of owners Beth and Dave Grella. Beth and Kobe earned a nice ribbon in the Novice Rider Classic Saddle class earlier in the week, finishing third. Unfortunately, Beth was unable to show her horse back, and requested that Alicia show him in her stead. We were all very excited with the results!

Kate Kielceski and Haleigh Quigg represented the strong Scottfield Equitation program very well at this notoriously competitive All Breed Equitation competition, with Kate earning top three honors in both the 13 & Under Saddleseat Equitation class as well as 17 & Under Pleasure Equitation class. Kate, who never shies away from a challenge, always enjoys the chance to compete against the top Saddlebred Equitation riders, and always holds her own with her very reliable and spunky, Hermitage Avatar. Kate looks forward to giving it her all at Oklahoma this fall, and with this team’s consistency and precision on a pattern, they will certainly be going with good odds! Haleigh Quigg continued her outstanding season, earning the Reserve nod in the Walk Trot Saddleseat Equitation qualifier as well as the Championship. Haleigh and Ultra’s Special Delivery have certainly caused a stir on the New England circuit with their consistently stylish and correct performances. A beautiful girl with correct position on a beautiful horse with motion to burn is a tough picture to beat!

Grace Snyder was a sensation in the 10 & Under Walk and trot Academy class with her former park horse partner, Syndicat Deuces Wild. If there is one thing this team has going for them, it is their cute factor! But once you look past the undeniable allure of a 55 pound blonde not just riding, but riding at a 24 show horse who really still is a show horse, and you see that this little girl can really ride! Though mothers everywhere held their breath as the peanut and her pony zipped around the ring, this team was spot on and the judge in the middle knew it! Gracie completed her first blue ribbon victory pass, and Deuce, who should want to retire by now, insisted that he still has victory passes left in him! Congratulations to proud parents Chip and Michelle, who have faithfully driven Grace to her twice weekly lessons since Grace was four…looks like the waiting is starting to pay off

Kate Kielceski switched out of her Saddleseat attire to pull on some hunt boots so that she could show the young, but sensible bay gelding, Hartland Infinity, in the Junior Exhibitor Hunter Pleasure classes. Given that this was a 17 & Under class, and Kate is a 13 & Under rider on “Quinn,” a 5 year old horse, we tried to keep our expectations realistic. But, “Quinn” and Kate both displayed maturity beyond their years and were rewarded for their solid, steady go with a 6th place finish in both the qualifier and championships! Having seen these good performances, Mary Puthawala decided to pursue adding “Quinn” to her fine roster of Morgan Show Horses. And with that… Congratulations to Mary Puthawala on her selection of Hartland Infinity for daughter Joy Puthawala! Keep an eye out for Quinn and Joy Puthawala in the Walk Trot Hunt Seat classes at New York Morgan Regional in September!

Syracuse International was a successful showing for Team Scottfield again this year, and will surely be on the list of shows we plan on attending in 2009.

With 4 shows behind us (UPHA Spring Premiere, NYS Breeders, Western NY Morgan, NY Morgan Amateur), and New England just around the corner, Team Scottfield has been going full tilt since the start of our season at the UPHA Spring Premiere. With so many new horse and riders combos entering the show ring this year, I had some speculation about how much winning we would enjoy this season, but much to my delight (and surprise!), even the new kids on the block are holding their own! Because so many of our teams are working on the basics of showing, Scottfield elected to forego the Vermont Spring Classic and stay in New York for the Breeders Show instead, which also was a wiser choice where gasoline prices are concerned. Fortunately, the Breeders show was especially strong this year, with many of the class numbers topping those seen at the more prominent New England circuit shows so far this spring.

Debuting with her gorgeous black mare, Candlelite Superette, Cathy Larcheveque has enjoyed victory passes this year, beginning with a Championship win at the NYS Breeders show in the Open Western Pleasure Championship. Given that this was the team’s show ring debut, we couldn’t have been more excited. Cathy, a lifelong Morgan owner, certainly waited for this, her first blue ribbon, and we couldn’t be more happy that Cathy finally has the right horse. Superette has been in development at Scottfield since she was a two year old, and showed in ‘07 as a hunter before being purchased by Cathy in August of last year.

Another highly successful new team is that of Ultra’s Special Delivery and Haleigh Quigg, who tied fourth in their first class together at Spring Premiere out of 12 strong competitors. This exciting team walked away from the NYS Breeders Show being crowned the Grand Champion Walk and Trot Equitation team. In this class, Haleigh competed against some of the best riders in the country in her division, beating two girls who finished in top ribbons at the World Championships last year. “Del” is a big moving horse with a heart of gold, and Haleigh is a beautiful rider with a ton of confidence in her talented gelding.

Also enjoying their first victory passes this season were Beth Ann Grella and her handsome black Classic gelding, LSF Nevermoretal. Their first class of the season, the Junior/Novice Horse class at Spring Premiere, was the winning one, and was the result of a lot of hard work on Beth’s part over the winter months. Emily Puthawala has just begun working in the western seat equitation division and came out to win the AMHA Western Seat Medal at the NY Morgan Amateur show. With nice rail work and a great pattern that was especially impressive since it was her first one in competition, Emily proved that she is indeed ready for this challenge. Little sister, Joy Puthawala also took a victory pass with her hocky black mare, W-B Elemint, in the Walk-Trot Hunter Pleasure championship at Western NY Morgan with a Reserve Championship ride. Joy has recently traded up from this lovely mare to a younger model with her selection of the handsome bay gelding, Hartland Infinity. Look for this team to debut at the NY Regional.

Our now very pregnant CN A Touch of Hope had a great NYS Breeders Show, finishing her In-Hand debut with the Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion mare titles before going on to also earn the Reserve Championship nod in the Open Classic Pleasure Driving section with owner/driver, Lory Kielceski. We can’t wait to see what this beautiful daughter of Master’s Touch and E.R. Hope Diamond produces, and with Minion Millennium as the sire, we are hoping for size and stretch. No stranger to the winner’s circle, Kate Kielceski and her faithful Hermitage Avatar continue to dominate the 13 & under Saddleseat Equitation division, winning at both UPHA Spring Premiere (by way of the blue in the UPHA Junior Challenge Cup and Reserve Grand Champion Junior Saddleseat Equitation) and walking away from Breeders undefeated. This team is very prepared to defend their Junior Saddleseat Equitation Championship title at the New England Regional this year.

LSF She’s Come Undone has enjoyed several victory passes already this year with owner/trainer Alicia Fraser doing the riding. This little mare proves that size doesn’t matter time and again by winning some very tough English Pleasure classes at various shows this year. Caitlan Reilly has worked incredibly hard the last 6 months to make the switch from showing Hunter Jumpers to teaming with her new English Pleasure mount, Hunter Hill By Design. The hard work paid off for the team at the NY Morgan Amateur show where Caitlan and “Jesse” took the Reserve Championship in the Open English Pleasure division. Congrats! Both of our Century bred colts made the second round call-back in the first edition of the Western New York Classic, with Century Casanova finishing eighth and Century Unsung Hero coming in seventh.

Aside from showing, Scottfield has also been busy selling. Hartland Emotion now belongs to Samuel Fisher of Hillside Horse Farm, while HVK Constitution Bell left Sam’s farm upon becoming Betty Rice’s new mount. MLF Merlin found a new home with equitation rider Julia Strier, a young lady who is ideal for this big, hot, English pleasure gelding. Mari Neidlinger made the smart offer to take this horse home for her lovely niece. Hartland Infinity now belongs to Joy Puthawala, much to the delight of all parties involved. This nice hunter won his 4 year old class last year at NY Morgan Regional, and has been begging for a little girl to love ever since. He sure has a nice one in Joy! Mary Puthawala made a very smart investment in purchasing Century Unsung Hero. This super typey bay 2 year old colt is really correct, kind, and willing to work. “Casey” is a barn favorite, and I couldn’t be happier for Mary!

All in all, we’ve had a very productive start to our season, and we can’t wait to get to New England Regional to see all of our friends from afar! Upon returning, our focus will shift to our Open Barn, which will be held on Saturday August 23rd, beginning at noon. We invite everyone who can to attend. And somewhere in between, we have 4,000 bales of hay to put up and 9 more Morgans to sell! We can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings! Good luck to all!

UPHA Spring Premier Results

With weather unseasonably pleasant for the month of April, it was hard to NOT enjoy this year’s edition of the UPHA Spring Premiere. Scottfield had a strong showing with the successful debut of both Ultra’s Special Delivery and Candlelite Superette.

Ultra’s Special Delivery earned top ribbons in both of his very large Walk and Trot Pleasure classes for Owner/rider, Haleigh Quigg. This is a beautiful horse, and though he may look like he is about to come unglued, he is good as gold and a kid’s horse through and through! Watch for them as they get ready to switch to the division we have really been gunning for, the Walk Trot Saddleseat Equitation classes!

Candlelite Superette gave owner, Cathy Larcheveque, a glimpse of things to come when she made a breathtakingly beautiful debut in the Morgan Western pleasure Jr/Novice class with trainer, Alicia Fraser, in the saddle. “Candi” and Cathy are slated to make their debut at NYS Breeders, and given that Cathy has been very patient in letting this horse take all of the right training steps, we feel confident that their debut will prove to be worth the wait!

Kate Kielceski enjoyed two victory passes, one in the UPHA 13 & under Challenge Cup (this was her second consecutive year winning this class at this show!), and also taking home the Reserve Grand Champion Junior Saddleseat Equitation title. That class was an extremely competitive one, and Kate put in her best rail work to date followed by one of her signature flawless patterns to handily earn a victory pass.

Also taking a victory pass was the beautiful combination of Beth Ann Grella and her black Morgan Gelding, LSF Nevermoretal. Together they won the Jr/Novice Classic Pleasure Saddle Class with gorgeous extensions and beautiful, expressive bridling. As this team continues to grow they will surely be at the top of many judges cards this year!

GW In Lieu of Cash made it up the ramp with both of his riders, Mary Puthawala and Emily Puthawala in the Western pleasure divisions. This mother/daughter team is still quite new to the show ring, but their chestnut western horse is a knockout in silver, and will help them reach any goal they aim at with a little more experience in the ring. Watch for them as they progress throughout the season.

W-B Elemint went to the show for practice only, and made much progress in the way of getting around her first horse show! At the age of 14, and after growing up on a very quiet Amish farm, this mare has a long row to hoe, but finished the week with fantastic results, leading us to shoot for the Western NY Morgan show to debut with her walk and trot owner/rider, Joy Puthawala.

LSF She’s Come Undone put in two great classes, completely error free, earning ribbons in both the English Pleasure qualifier and Championship. A small but spicy chestnut, this mare gets noticed everywhere she is shown!

All in all, it was a very successful show, and we look forward to NYS Breeders and Western New York Morgan in the coming weeks, where we have still have more teams to make their debuts!

Get Pumped & Prepped

A good time was had by all!

Across the weekend of April 5th - 6th, Scottfield riders gathered at the farm for an intensive weekend aimed specifically at preparing them for the showring. With Lunge Line Lessons, Hair & Make-up show and tell, group riding lessons on show horses, viewing judging standards videos, tail washing instructions, and more, Saturday was a long one. The troops returned early Sunday morning to find more of the same, in addition to fun team building exercises and a very popular “Fear In A Hat” exercise that seemed to ease everyone’s mind about show ring anxieties. The afternoon was a blast with our mini Horse Show. Haleigh Quigg won her walk-trot class, while Mary Puthawala cam out on top in the Western pleasure class. Our Saddleseat class was very impressive to watch, but it was Kate Kielceski who won the coveted trophy. Each rider was given a neck medal for participating, and when all was said and done, the group whole-heartedly agreed that they were indeed Pumped and Prepped for Show Season ’08!!

Little Bits O' News 3/17/08

While all of the updates aren't complete and there are several changes yet to come over the next few months, be sure to check out our website, www.scottfieldstables.com, frequently as we are currently in the process of making some improvements!

Also, we are gearing up for UPHA Spring Premiere, and have 7 horses slated to make the trip with 6 scheduled to actually compete: GW In Lieu of Cash will compete with both of the mother/daughter team with Emily Puthawala showing in the Jr. Exhibitor Western Pleasure, while Mary will have her turn with this handsome chrome-trimmed gelding in the Amateur Western pleasure division. Also entering the Western Pleasure ranks is the new team of Candlelite Superette and Cathy Larcheveque, who will be competing in the Jr./Novice and Opportunity classes at this show. "Candi" was purchased last fall after a very successful first season in the Junior Hunter Pleasure division. LSF She's Come Undone will be chasing the big Jackpot money with Alicia in the irons in the Open English Pleasure $1,500 Jackpot Stake. Also bearing the LSF prefix, LSF Nevermoretal and his owner, Beth Ann Grella, will be once again teaming up to show in the Classic Pleasure Saddle divisions. Now that this team has a year under their belt, we are looking forward to great results this season! You should see these two strut their stuff, zipping down those straightaways! Haleigh Quigg is slated to debut on her FABULOUS new horse, Ultra's Special Delivery. Because the scheduling prevents them from competing in the Equitation division, they will be gunning for the Walk and Trot Pleasure division at this show, and this team certainly has come together quickly...aggressive doesn't begin to describe Haleigh's attitude on this equally game partner. And also showing No Mercy will be the very seasoned and solid team of Hermitage Avatar and Kate Kielceski. After finishing third i the World Championships 13 & Under Saddleseat Equitation division last fall, this team is going for broke as they enter their final year of 13 & Under together. At UPHA, we will be looking to get qualified for the Challenge Cup Finals so we can focus on pursuing the AMHA Medal classes as the season progresses. While all of these teams are heading to Springfield planning to compete, W-B Elemint and owner/rider Joy Puthawala are wisely choosing to learn how to be at a horse show together before they make the trip up the ramp! "Ella" grew up on an Amish farm where sounds such as heavy equipment and screaming fans we never heard, so this will be a big week for this aged mare and her little jockey, but Joy always looks out for the well-being of her mare, so we are pleased with the decision to gain some experience and sit this one out. So look out, Spring Premiere.... we are on our way! Also worthy of note, Congratulations go out to Grace Snyder who just today successfully completed her first group ride on her horse, Syndicat Deuces Wild. Anyone who knows Deuce knows that he is a bagful of bobcats when he wants to be, and given that Grace is 50 lbs. Soaking wet and only 7 years old, this is quite an accomplishment! GO GRACE!! Happy Easter to All! In honor of this holiday, we will be closed Easter Sunday, and the barn will also be closed this coming Thursday afternoon. Take Care!! ~Alicia

Drue Bormann teams up with KJM Heir of Confession 3/12/08

Drue Bormann, who groomed for Scottfield all last show season and also showed "Reba" the Reserve Amateur Hunter Pleasure Championship last year at Syracuse International, has switched seats and upgraded horses. With paperwork freshly completed, Drue is psyched to compete this season with Haleigh Quigg's KJM Heir of Confession in the Ladies English Pleasure division. While Fred will remain for sale throughout the lease, we are happy to see him competing with such a skilled, comprehensive rider in a very competitive division. And with the market being so soft right now, we are also relieved not to be rushed to take an unreasonably low dollar for such a high-end horse! Drue has already ridden Fred several times, and they are just great together! Congratulations to Drue and thank you to Haleigh for generously sharing her horse! Kudos to All!
